What was actually said

“Blogs bury old posts in the timeline. A HNer built a map view for a blog: regions are topics, buildings are posts, readers explore instead of scroll.”

Background and pain

The pain

Knowledge discovery on content sites is a chronic problem: tags are dry, recommendations heavy — a spatial metaphor may be the light middle ground.

A buildable angle

The opening

A blog-map generator: parse sitemap/RSS into an explorable map (D3/game-engine rendering), sold as templates to indie blogs.

How to validate it

  1. Read the whole thread and note the recurring scenarios — repetition is the density of the need.
  2. Search existing tools around "blog / navigation" and check which single step they actually cover.
  3. Put up a one-line landing page, share it back to Hacker News, and see whether anyone asks about pricing.

Very cool. Is the terrain (coastlines, roads) procedurally generated from the t-SNE positions, or hand-drawn on top of the layout?

— Zilize

It's all procedural. I get some parameters I can tune, like thresholds and how crooked to make the road, but the algorithm does the rest.
